HIPAA, Privacy and Confidentiality

WHAT IS HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law requiring national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. The HIPAA Privacy Rule that implements the requirements of HIPAA was issued by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to Hillary Clinton, people rely on confidential communications to do their jobs in almost every profession – whether it’s law, journalism, finance, medicine, academia, or running a small business. We rely on the trust-filled environment provided by confidentiality and when someone betrays that trust, it makes all of us worse off.

The state in which information is kept secret or not disclosed is called confidentiality. It comes from confiding, meaning trusting someone or telling secrets to them. This has been a basic factor that is essential to what customers seek in every organization or company. In the health sector, confidentiality refers to the restriction of access to patients’ personal information.

Covered entities are healthcare providers like doctors, nurses, medical facilities, and others who handle patient health information. Medical professionals are responsible for maintaining patient confidentiality, as stipulated by the Privacy Rule of HIPAA, which states that they cannot legally share patient information without their consent.

WHAT IS THE HIPAA SEAL OF COMPLIANCE VERIFICATION?

The healthcare sector’s third-party HIPAA verification is the HIPAA Seal of Compliance. It is now the verification standard in the healthcare industry. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ensures that all federally mandated HIPAA standards are fully addressed and incorporated into an efficient compliance program for the entire organization.

To meet the minimum required standard, medical facilities are required to implement policies to safeguard patients’ data and privacy by HIPAA regulations. According to this standard, patient health information should be kept private unless sharing it is necessary for a specific purpose.
